The leaders of the two warring Koreas – Kim Jong-un (North Korea) and Moon Jae-in (South Korea) – announced on Thursday that they will meet on April 27, one part of a broader effort to achieve denuclearization in North Korea and a broader peace deal between the two countries.

The Associated Press reported:

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will meet South Korean President Moon Jae-in at a border village on April 27, the South announced Thursday, for a rare summit that could prove significant in global efforts to resolve the decades-long standoff over the North’s nuclear program.

The announcement was made after officials of the two countries met at the border village of Panmunjom. The Koreas plan to hold another preparatory meeting on April 4 to discuss security, protocol and media coverage issues, according to a statement released by the countries.

What does it mean for a possible Trump-Kim meeting, before the end of May?

For one, it builds on the momentum of Kim’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this week, and on President Trump’s tweets in support of a meeting with Kim. A smooth meeting between Kim and Moon would make a Trump-Kim meeting all the more likely.

On the other hand, any major conflicts between Kim and Moon could send Kim withdrawing from the negotiating table, and threaten to cancel what would be a historic meeting of adversaries.

Either way, Americans will know if Trump can follow through on his informal deadline in the next eight weeks.
