In an appearance on CNN on Sunday, Sen. Angus King (I-ME) defended the legality of President Trump’s strike on the Assad regime’s chemical weapons facilities.

While he had not yet seen the evidence yet, King expressed confidence in the Pentagon’s assessment that Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad’s forces used chemical weapons on civilians.

“I think it’s important, Jake, to distinguish between a chemical weapons attack and a general incursion into Syria,” King told CNN’s Jake Tapper.

The senator cited a long history of global outrage at chemical weapons use as justification for Trump’s military incursion.

“That really is a red line for most of the world, so going in to take out chemical weapons capacity, which is what this strike’s about, is arguably within our national interest and justified,” he said.

However, for a larger engagement in the Syrian civil war, the president would need approval from Congress, King added.
