Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), a three-term Republican senator with a distinguished political career, announced in a statement Monday that he would not seek reelection in 2020.

Alexander had previously served as governor of Tennessee, Secretary of Education under President George H.W. Bush, president of the University of Tennessee, and ran for president in 1996 and 2000.

“The people of Tennessee have been very generous, electing me to serve more combined years as governor and senator than anyone else from our state. I am deeply grateful, but now it is time for someone else to have that privilege,” the 78-year old Alexander said on Monday. “I have gotten up every day thinking that I could help make our state and country a little better, and gone to bed most nights thinking that I have. I will continue to serve with that same spirit during the remaining two years of my term.”

Alexander was well liked in Tennessee, and early polls showed him in a strong position for reelection.

Alexander is following fellow Tennessee Senator, Bob Corker, out the door. Corker’s retirement will take effect in January. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) defeated former Gov. Phil Bredesen (D-TN) last month in the race to replace him.

The retirement announcement is the first of the 2020 Senate season and will likely set off a scramble to find suitable candidates on the left and right to run for his seat. Republicans are defending seats in North Carolina, Colorado, and Iowa, among others. Depending on the candidates, Tennessee could become a battleground, as well.
