LaPierre: If You Think We Still Have the First Amendment, Go Out to Berkeley

"If you still think we have full First Amendment freedom in this country, try going right now out to Berkeley and speaking out in favor of conservative causes."

National Rifle Association (NRA) chairman Wayne LaPierre expressed doubt that Americans still have full First Amendment rights in the United States today, because of liberals who will only tolerate “controlled speech.”

LaPierre made this statement while addressing the crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Thursday, and pointed to the University of California, Berkeley as an example of where Americans’ First Amendment rights no longer exist in his opinion.

“Socialists oppose all of our most fundamental freedoms enshrined in the Bill of Rights. They don’t like free speech any more than they like the Second Amendment. They like only limited speech, controlled speech: controlled by them through safe speech zones where they can shame the outspoken or riot to shut them up,” LaPierre told the crowd.

“If you still think we have full First Amendment freedom in this country, try going right now out to Berkeley and speaking out in favor of conservative causes or even the Second Amendment,” LaPierre continued.

Since the election of President Trump in November of 2016 the University of California, Berkeley has erupted into violent protests over conservative speakers who were scheduled to speak on campus.
