Lawmakers Literally Pray on Senate Floor for Trump to Sign Budget Bill

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) called on his colleagues to pray that President Trump signs the budget bill the chamber is expected to vote on and send to his desk ahead of the Friday deadline.

“Let’s all pray that the president will have wisdom to sign the bill so government doesn’t shut down,” Grassley said before leading the chamber in the pledge of allegiance.

The Hill called Grassley’s call to prayer “unusual” and noted that most Senate sessions are opened by the pledge and an announcement of who is giving the daily prayer.

But his opening Thursday underscored lawmakers’ desire to see the funding deal reached by a bipartisan group of negotiators get over the finish line and prevent another shutdown, after the record-long 35-day partial shutdown ended just last month.

Congress is expected to take up a funding deal that would prevent a second government shutdown in as many months later Thursday.

After a 35-day shutdown, it appears both sides are eager to avoid another budget impasse that could lead to federal employees receiving delayed paychecks.

The bill that the Senate is expected to take up on Thursday provides $1.375 billion in funding for a U.S.-Mexico border fence. The 1,100-page deal funds one-quarter of the government through Sept. 30.
