Lawsuit Alleges Dem Gov Candidate Routinely ‘Herded,’ ‘Marginalized’ Minority Campaign Staffers

A group of African-American and Latino workers for the Democratic candidate for governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, filed a lawsuit against Pritzker’s campaign organization for discrimination and harassment on Tuesday.

The lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, alleges that the campaign routinely “herded” and “marginalized” its workers of color.

“JB Pritzker for Governor has a serious race problem,” the lawsuit said. “Contrary to the candidate’s many public avowals, rather than working to meaningfully address discrimination, racism is perpetuated, condoned and ratified by the Campaign.”

According to the lawsuit:

“There are over 200 campaign workers for JB Pritzker for Governor, of which about 90 are field organizers. Of those 90, the vast majority of Black and Latino field organizers are herded into POD 4, which comprises the field regions of 5 for the Westside of Chicago, 6 for the Southside of Chicago, and 7 for the Far Southside.”

The lawsuit goes on to accuse the Pritzker campaign of placing field offices within POD 4 in “unsafe” locations and refused to relocate these offices, even though a Chicago alderman “offered to let them use space, for free, in a safer location.”

Making matters worse, when these field staffers in POD 4 asked campaign officials when Pritzker would visit their offices, they were told, “He’ll visit when they stop shooting.”

Pritzker served as national co-chairman of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign and is the brother of Penny Pritzker, who served as former President Barack Obama’s Secretary of Commerce. He is running against incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner (R-IL).
