Theresa Greenfield the leading Democratic candidate in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District was forced to end her campaign on Wednesday after she failed to collect enough signatures to get on the ballot.

Roll Call reported:

“The night before the March 16 filing deadline, she discovered her campaign manager had forged some of the signatures that accompanied her candidate petition, according to the Des Moines Register. So she withdrew her petition and scrambled to collect all new signatures to refile in less than 24 hours. But in the end, she fell 198 signatures short of the 1,790 required.”

“This is a tough pill to swallow for all of our friends and supporters who worked so hard the past two weeks to put my name on the ballot, including what was really a difficult and courageous vote of support on Monday by the Third District Central Committee of the Iowa Democratic Party,” Greenfield said in a statement on Wednesday. “But I accept the Attorney General’s decision.”

“I think it’s a very different situation this morning,” an Iowa Democratic insider told Roll Call about Greenfield dropping out of the primary. “And my guess is all their campaigns are changing their strategy because most people were preparing to go to convention.”

The Democratic primary in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District seemed likely it would be decided at the Iowa state convention, as no candidate appeared able to achieve the required 35 percent of the vote to receive the Democratic nomination.

With Greenfield now out of the race, Democratic candidates will have to focus on courting voters rather than convention delegates.

As for Greenfield, she told Roll Call she is going to “make banana bread.”
