Liberal Activists’ Top Pick is Bernie By a Landslide, Poll Says

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is the preferred candidate among liberal activists associated with the group Democracy For America (DFA). The group conducted a presidential primary poll among its members. After receiving 96,641 responses, Sanders won the poll with 42.3 percent of the vote.

The next closest candidate was Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who only mustered 10.52 percent of the vote, a full 30 percentage points behind Sanders.

This is the second such poll conducted by DFA. Sanders won the previous poll as well, but this poll marked an improvement for Warren and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN):

In the first DFA poll in December, Sanders led at 36.2%, with former Vice President Joe Biden second with 15%. Biden’s support has now slumped to 8%, while South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s soared from nowhere to 3rd spot, with 9.7% support.

Both Biden and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke saw their support drop dramatically since Decemeber:

Biden, who is expected to enter the race this week, is in fourth place at 7.9 percent, down from 14.9 in the previous survey. The former vice president has scores of influential Democratic allies and donors waiting on the sidelines to support him, but his entrance into the race sets the stage for a brutal battle between progressives and mainstream Democrats over the future direction of the party.

O’Rourke is in sixth place at 3.5 percent, down from 12.3 in the December poll. The former Texas congressman entered the race with high expectations after nearly toppling Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) last year, but he’s seen much of his momentum blunted by the rise of Buttigieg, who is similarly pitching generational change.

While these surveys are largely meaningless from an electoral standpoint, they do show where support and momentum within the liberal activist wing of the Democratic Party lies. Biden may have the support of many rank-and-file Democrats, but if this poll it to be believed, he’ll have an uphill battle winning over the far-left liberals in his party, not unlike Hillary Clinton in 2016.
