Liberal Sunrise Movement Unloads on Biden’s ‘Middle Ground’ Climate Plan

A Friday morning report from Reuters about Vice President Joe Biden’s so-called “middle ground” climate change policy set off a firestorm in Washington, D.C.

Biden’s plan hopes to appeal to both environmentalists and blue-collar voters, a tricky needle to thread in 2019 America.

The “backbone” of the policy would include the U.S. rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement, an international accord designed to limit greenhouse gas emissions. President Donald Trump announced he intended to withdraw from the agreement, which the U.S. entered under President Obama’s administration.

But Biden’s plan would also include working with other, more traditional energy sectors:

The second source, a former energy department official also advising Biden’s campaign who asked not to be named, said the policy will likely also be supportive of nuclear energy and fossil fuel options like natural gas and carbon capture technology, which limit emissions from coal plants and other industrial facilities.

That position set off liberal environmentalists Friday morning. The Sunrise Movement, a far-left group focused on climate change, called the position a “death sentence.”

“A ‘middle ground’ policy that’s supportive of more fossil fuel development is a death sentence for our generation and the millions of people on the frontlines of the climate crisis,” the group said in a statement.

The Sunrise Movement’s president added that he has been traveling the country in recent months, and his belief is that “the climate crisis is her and it’s killing people.”

“Biden’s betting that a retreat to mediocrity and tepid policy making will garner him the Democratic nomination, but climate change is a top issue in this election and[,] voters expected candidates to put forward solutions in line with the crisis,” he wrote.
