Liberals Attack Pelosi for Defending John Conyers

Nancy Pelosi’s defense of “icon” John Conyers immediately contradicted her claim that there should be a “zero tolerance” policy for sexual misconduct.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is in hot water Monday after a botched interview on “Meet The Press” in which she defended Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), who “has been accused of sexually harassing former members of his congressional staff and who reached a taxpayer-funded settlement with one accuser who said she was fired for rejecting his advances.”

Pelosi praised Conyers, who has denied the allegations, as an “icon,” questioned the identity of his accusers and declined to call for his resignation — all within moments of having hailed the “zero tolerance” movement against sexual misconduct as “transformative … so wholesome, so refreshing, so different.”

Pelosi’s comments were criticized as tone-deaf and a bad flub — one that diluted the message that Democrats want to be sending on sexual misconduct, particularly in light of Roy Moore’s Senate campaign in Alabama and President Donald Trump’s support for him.

In a piece published by Vox titled “Nancy Pelosi is that woman,” Laura McGann wrote that Pelosi “ran through a list of excuses for Conyers that are the very reasons women are afraid to come forward and report sexual harassment in the first place.” She called Pelosi’s praise akin to a “betrayal.”

The Daily Beast went further, claiming in its headline that Pelosi “Botches the #MeToo Moment.” Reporter Erin Gloria Ryan called Pelosi’ praise of the #MeToo movement “[e]mpowerment word salad” and had harsh words for the way Pelosi handled the Conyers allegations:

Pelosi is far from the only partisan who has demonstrated uneven morals when it comes to sexual misconduct. She’s not the only one who doesn’t understand what must be done. She’s just the most visible and the latest, and likely won’t be the last.

The chorus of Democrats calling for Pelosi to step aside is growing louder by the day, and her defense of a man accused of sexual harassment and assault will do her no favors among the party’s younger generation.
