New Yorkers gathered in a Brooklyn synagogue Monday evening for an event that never happened. Or, at least, not like it was originally planned.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was grounded by plane troubles in Utica, N.Y. Monday afternoon, preventing him from attending his first in-person town hall meeting of 2018.

Attendees packed into a 90-degree synagogue and waited. And waited.

Finally, Schumer’s staffers hastily assembled a tele-town hall that allowed attendees their opportunity to speak to Schumer, albeit not in person. And he got an earful.

Liat Olenick, the founder of Indivisible Nation BK, an anti-extremism group, said the phone call was not enough, and called for the event to be rescheduled. Activists had lobbied for months for an in-person town-hall meeting. “The town hall is all about public accountability,” she said. “When you phone it in, there’s no real accountability.”

Another caller claimed Democrats were using a butter knife in a gunfight when it comes to battling Republicans over the Supreme Court:

Mr. Schumer spoke of the dangers facing the country and democracy with strong words — “We need to fight Donald Trump all the way, in every way,” he said — but in an even-keeled tone that his constituent callers did not share.

“We are in a gunfight and we have a butter knife,” one said. Another likened the situation to a basketball game where Republicans were “slitting throats” on the court while Democrats were working on their bounce passes. There were calls for civil disobedience and concerns about America slipping toward dictatorship.

Several people criticized Schumer’s rebuke of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), who called for public harassment of Trump administration officials in public places over the weekend. Waters later criticized Schumer for doing “anything that’s necessary to protect” his leadership position in the Senate.
