Lightfoot: It Looks Like Jussie Smollett Staged a Hoax, and He Needs to Be Held Accountable

"I saw...a very compelling case, with videotapes, witness statements, and other information that look like he had staged a hoax," Lori Lightfoot said about Jussie Smollett on Wednesday.

Newly elected Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot said that the evidence suggests that embattled actor Jussie Smollett staged a hoax earlier this year when he claimed to be the victim of a hate crime. She added during an interview Wednesday that Smollett needs to be held accountable.

MSNBC’s Craig Melvin asked Lightfoot what she thought about the 16 charges against Smollett being dropped and if everyone involved in the case should keep their jobs.

“First of all, we need to make sure we recognize that hate crimes are real, sadly they do happen,” Lightfoot said. “What I’ve said on this issue is the state’s attorney’s office here, which made the decision unilaterally to drop the charges, has to give a much more fulsome explanation.”

Lightfoot added that Chicago can’t appear to have two justice systems: one for the rich and powerful, and one for everyone else.

“The state’s attorney’s office has to provide more information about the rationale for the decision to drop the charges,” Lightfoot said.

Melvin asked Lightfoot whether she believed Smollett.

“I believe that everybody is entitled to the presumption of innocence. But I saw, as I am sure you and your listeners saw, a very compelling case with videotapes, witness statements, and other information that looked like he had staged a hoax,” Lightfoot said. “If that happens, he’s got to be held accountable.”
