As if the 2020 Democratic field needed one more candidate, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) announced Monday night that he, too, is joining the Democratic presidential primary during an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

Swalwell, 38, would join South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN), former HUD Secretary Julian Castro, and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) on the younger end of the spectrum of candidates.

The congressman says, “I see a country in quicksand, unable to solve threats from abroad, unable to make life better for people here at home.”

He says, “None of that is going to change until we get a leader who is willing to go big on the issues we take on, be bold in the solutions we offer and do good in the way that we govern.”

One advantage Swalwell could have? He was born in Iowa. He’s served in Congress, representing a northern California district east of San Francisco and north of San Jose.

Swalwell has promised to focus his campaign on fighting gun violence. “We should take the most dangerous weapons out of the hands of the most dangerous people,” he says in his presidential announcement video.

Swalwell’s slogan is: “Go big. Be bold. Do good.”
