Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) converted an event honoring the opening of the Northeastern University Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC) into a campaign speech Monday in Boston.

Warren did not take long to get political. “I just want to say something that is pretty deeply controversial down in Washington, but I want to say it here,” Warren said a few sentences into her speech. “I believe in science.”

Getting back on topic, Warren discussed the positive contributions of ISEC to the Northeastern community and the world outside.

However, Warren could not restrain herself for long and eventually turned to criticizing federal spending levels on various liberal pet projects.

Warren began with health issues: “Add the other problems that we face: climate change, warming oceans, power storage. How massive these problems [are] and how little we are spending to deal with these problems that we face.”

“It is staggeringly stupid not to invest in research,” Warren said.

Warren then turned fully political, bashing the Trump administration. “When this administration calls for 20 percent cuts to funding basic research, when they want to cut a billion dollars out of this year’s research expenditures, they are saying loud and clear that they don’t know how to build a strong future for this country.”

“They are saying, let’s warm up short term profits by burning down our children’s future,” Warren added.

Warren promised that she and anyone who agreed with her assessment would “fight back.”

Warren has been mentioned as a potential challenger to President Trump in 2020, and she seemed to revel in that role Monday morning.
