French President Emmanuel Macron, in a joint address to Congress on Wednesday, took time out of his speech to thank WWII veteran Robert Jackson Ewald for his sacrifice in liberating France.

“Since 1776, we the American and French people, have had a rendezvous with freedom, and with it, comes sacrifices,” he told Congress.

The French president then pointed to Ewald, seated in the gallery.

“Robert Jackson Ewald took part in the D-Day landing. He fought for our freedom 74 years ago,” Macron said. “On behalf of France, thank you. I bow to your courage and your devotion.”

Congress rose to their feet to give Ewald a standing ovation.
