Majority of Americans Oppose Abolishing ICE

A new Politico/Morning Consult poll that found a majority of Americans oppose abolishing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, and that could spell trouble for Democrats in the 2018 midterm elections.

According to the poll, which was released on Wednesday, 54 percent of American oppose getting rid of ICE, while only 25 percent of Americans support the idea.

Seventy-three percent of Republicans and 54 percent of independents also oppose abolishing ICE. Only 43 percent of Democrats support the idea, compared to 34 percent who oppose it.

This new Politico/Morning Consult poll could prove problematic for Democrats who have made abolishing ICE a campaign issue ahead of the pivotal 2018 midterm elections.

Following democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez‘s stunning primary upset of House Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY) last month, Democrats have made abolishing ICE a campaign issue they are willing to run on.

Cortez was an early advocate of the abolish ICE movement, and since her victory 2020 hopefuls like Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) have joined the abolish ICE movement.

House Democrats have taken the abolish ICE movement one step further, as they are currently drafting an “Abolish ICE” bill, according to the Washington Post.

The Washington Post reported:

“A Democratic proposal to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement would shutter the agency, probe whether its agents had flouted international law, and create a special commission to rethink how the federal government handles asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants.”

“The text of Rep. Mark Pocan’s “Abolish ICE” bill, obtained Tuesday by The Washington Post, was sent to House Democrats as they returned from the Fourth of July recess. The legislation, still being tweaked before release, is co-sponsored by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.), both of whom are immigrants.”

Given that a majority of Democrats don’t even support such legislation, the party might want to rethink introducing such legislation, as it could have a devastating impact on their chances of retaking Congress in 2018.
