A new Politico/Harvard poll surveyed the American public’s top priorities for 2019. Included on the list were reducing the deficit, fighting domestic terrorism and hate crimes, and tackling the opioid epidemic.

In all, pollsters proposed 21 issues for respondents to rate in terms of importance. The least important issue for Americans, according to this poll, was impeaching President Donald Trump.

Even as the public demands investigations, it’s wary of impeachment. About 57 percent said impeaching Trump should not be a top priority, with 32 percent of Democrats and 83 percent of Republicans agreeing. It tied for last place among 21 ranked issues.

Robert Blendon, a Harvard professor who helped facilitate the poll, said that voters would rather debate the merits of Trump’s presidency at the ballot box than in an impeachment hearing.

“[There’s] a sense by a lot of people that they would prefer that this be settled in the 2020 election,” he said.

Majorities of Americans said they did support continued investigations into Trump’s investment and taxes and for the Mueller investigation to go forward, but few are backing outright impeachment. Likely incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will be forced to balance the interests of the American people and her liberal caucus, many of whom want to see the president impeached.
