A new poll conducted by Grinnell College found that Americans are extremely divided over whether NFL players should be allowed to kneel during the national anthem, with a majority of Democrats supporting the idea.

The poll was conducted just days before the 2018 NFL season kicks off with the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles playing the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night.

The Grinnell College poll found that “35 percent strongly believe all players should stand during the national anthem,” while “36 percent strongly believe players should be able to kneel if it’s important to them.”

According to the poll, 69 percent of Republicans strongly believe that players should stand during the national anthem, while “59 percent of Democrats strongly believe they should be allowed to kneel.”

Only 18 percent of adults under age 35 support standing for the national anthem, while 48 percent of those polled above 55 support standing.

“If you want to start an argument,” said J. Ann Selzer, who directed the poll, “Forget religion and politics. Just ask a group what they think about NFL players kneeling during the national anthem.”

The only thing that Americans seem to agree on when it comes to the national anthem issue is that NFL owners aren’t doing enough to address the issue. Fifty-one percent of those polled saying they are not convinced NFL owners are doing enough.
