In an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) told host Jake Tapper that it would be “premature” for Congress to pass legislation protecting Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

“There’s a process they have to go through,” Manchin said of firing Mueller. “I have the utmost confidence and faith in our Justice Department.”

As for Trump, the senator interpreted the president’s behavior as that of a political novice.

“People have to understand, [there’s a man] all his life has been in control of his own life, his own destiny. He’s been able. He’s been very successful. He’s been able to have control of his personal life and his professional life in the business world,” he illustrated to Tapper.

However, Manchin explained that Trump could no longer act like his business-self and had to respect the judicial process.

Manchin’s comments come days after The New York Times reported that the president ordered Mueller fired last June but relented after White House staff refused.
