Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) met with Judge Brett Kavanaugh on Monday for slightly more than two hours, after which, Manchin called the meeting “productive.”

“Today, Judge Kavanaugh and I had a productive meeting and talked about his experience, record and a variety of issues that will impact West Virginians, including his views on healthcare,” Manchin, who’s up for reelection in a red state this year, said in a press release. “I will not make a final decision on Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination until I complete a thorough and fair examination of his candidacy in order to decide whether he should hold the position of Associate Justice on the highest court in the land, just as I did with Neil Gorsuch.

Manchin has been playing up his supposed independence as of late, telling Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to “kiss my you know what” over Schumer’s supposed pressure on Senate Democrats regarding Kavanaugh.

Manchin, though, appeared to make Schumer his first visit after the hours-long meeting with Kavanaugh.

In a tweet, Nate Brand, a spokesman for Attorney General Patrick Morrisey (R-WV) – Manchin’s general election opponent – said “[o]f course Manchin reported immediately to Schumer’s office after [the] Kavanaugh meeting.”

Morrisey retweeted Brand’s tweet.

It shows the kind of pressure Manchin will be under as he chooses between Schumer and his constituents, 55 percent of whom want Kavanaugh confirmed.
