Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) is meeting with Judge Brett Kavanaugh on Monday afternoon, making him the first Senate Democrat to meet with President Trump’s nominee to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court.

For Supreme Court nominees in the past, such a meeting would rarely generate so many headlines. But Democrats have engaged in a refusal to meet with Kavanaugh that is unprecedented in modern political times.

Manchin praised Kavanaugh earlier in July, in comments flagged by NTK Network.

“No, I don’t have a lean. I think [Kavanaugh] seems to be a very fine person of high moral standards. A family person who’s very involved in his community. Has all the right qualities. He’s well-educated,” Manchin said.

And Manchin told Schumer to “kiss my you know what” when asked by Politico about Schumer’s influence on his Democratic colleagues in the Kavanaugh fight.

“I’ll be 71 years old in August, you’re going to whip me? Kiss my you know what,” said Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) when asked if Schumer can influence his vote.

Whether Manchin will back up his tough words with a vote to confirm a Supreme Court nominee with “all the right qualities,” as Manchin himself put it, remains to be seen.

Manchin was one of the three Senate Democrats to vote to confirm then-Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court in 2017.
