Manchin, Morrisey Met for Only WV-Sen. Debate as Polls Tighten

"The fact is on health care, like every issue, Senator Manchin is on all sides of every issue. He's either for Obamacare then against Obamacare,” Morrisey said Thursday night.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey (R-WV) met for the first and only West Virginia U.S. Senate debate Thursday evening, amid a tightening in public polling.

Two polls released on Thursday, one by Emerson and the other by West Virginia MetroNews, showed Manchin with just a five-point lead on Morrisey, and neither showed the incumbent hitting the 50-percent mark.

A previous poll from earlier in the month showed Manchin with a 16-point lead. That gap, if it ever truly existed, appears to have shrunk dramatically in the closing days of the 2018 midterms.

Morrisey behaved like a candidate who knows he’s within reach during Thursday’s debate. During one rebuttal to remarks Manchin had made, Morrisey laid into Manchin’s long record of saying whatever he has to in order to get elected.

“The fact is on health care, like every issue, Senator Manchin is on all sides of every issue,” Morrisey said. “He’s either for Obamacare then against Obamacare.” He then rattled off a series of other issues in which Manchin has flip-flopped: support for Planned Parenthood, the Second Amendment, and even Donald Trump.

“He said he was open to Donald Trump, but when the key judgment came in 2016, he said no to Donald Trump,” Morrisey said. “I’m a conservative fighter for President Trump. He made his bed with Hillary Clinton, and that is bad for West Virginia.”
