Mason-Dixon Poll: Scott Becomes Narrow Leader in FL-Sen. Race vs. Nelson

Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) has taken a narrow lead over Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) in the latest version of Mason-Dixon’s polling for Florida’s U.S. Senate race.

Mason-Dixon found Nelson in a one-point lead when they polled the race in February. Now, Scott has taken a three-point lead in the expensive contest, 47-44.

Politico‘s Marc Caputo reported:

Scott leads Nelson 47-44 percent in the Mason-Dixon Polling & Research survey, a net shift of about 4 points in the Republican’s favor since the firm’s last poll in February when the race was a dead heat. The margin of error for the poll of 625 registered Florida voters is plus or minus 4 percentage points. The poll was conducted July 24-25.

…Scott is winning 84 percent of Republicans and 12 percent of Democrats compared to Nelson who’s winning 80 percent of Democrats and 7 percent of Republicans in the poll, meaning Scott is doing both better with his base than Nelson and is pulling more support from Nelson’s base than Nelson is from his. Scott is also winning independents by 47-43 percent.

One trouble sign for Nelson is that Scott is winning independents by a four-point margin.

Caputo noted that another ‘trouble sign’ for Nelson is that “the poll samples slightly more Democrats than Republicans.”

It’s the second positive poll result for Scott in two weeks. Morning Consult found last week, in its quarterly survey of governors’ approval ratings, that Scott has a +19-point net approval rating in his home state. Fifty-four percent of Florida voters approve of Scott’s performance as governor, and only 35 percent disapprove.
