Massive Schumer Recruitment Fail: Abrams Not Running in Georgia

Despite applying intense pressure, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NY, the chair of Senate Democrats’ campaign arm, failed to convince Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams to challenge Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) in 2020.

Abrams, who unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2018, announced via video on Twitter on Tuesday that while she appreciated all of the encouragement to run for Senate, she’s not interested.

“I do not see the U.S. Senate as the best role for me in this battle for our nation’s future,” she said.

Abrams’ decision is a devastating blow to Schumer and Cortez Masto, who have struggled to recruit top-tier Democrats to run against incumbent Republican senators in 2020.

In Colorado, former Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-CO) chose to run for president instead of challenge Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO), and the same appears ready to happen in Montana, where Gov. Steve Bullock is sounding more likely to run for president than challenge Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT). Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke received strong encouragement to run against Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), but opted to run for president, as well.

In Iowa, former Gov. Tom Vilsack (D-IA) said he would not challenge Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA). In Maine, former U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice said she would not challenge Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME). And in North Carolina, Schumer was unable to convince Attorney General Josh Stein (D-NC) to challenge Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC).

In short, it’s been a total disaster of a recruitment effort for the 2020 cycle, and the latest news about Abrams is just the latest top recruit to pass on an opportunity to run for a seat that Democrats desperately need to win if they have any hopes of taking back control of the Senate in 2021.
