"I think it's tougher for Biden if he runs because he's a moderate," Chris Matthews said.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews said that he thinks it will be difficult for Vice President Joe Biden to win the Democratic Party’s nomination for president in 2020 because he’s a moderate, during an interview with Politico‘s “Off Message.”

Politico‘s Edward-Isaac Dovere told Matthews that he was talking with someone from Hillary Clinton’s campaign who thinks it’s more believable that Trump wins in 2020 than it was that he would win in 2016.

Matthews explained that presidential elections are binary contests.

“In the end, you run Elizabeth Warren, who I can see winning the early primaries,” Matthews said. “I can see Kamala Harris winning California. I can see Bernie winning. I think it’s tougher for Biden if he runs because he’s a moderate. But then again he might be able to bunch over them and do the Carter thing.”
