Prime Minister Theresa May announced that the United Kingdom expelled 23 Russian diplomats on Wednesday, following an inadequate response from Moscow over a neurotoxin attack against a former Russian intelligence operative on U.K. soil.

“This represents an unlawful use of force by the Russian state against the United Kingdom,” May told the House of Commons.

The prime minister said that her government took action to “degrade” Russian intelligence operations in her country.

“This morning I chaired a further meeting of the national security council where we agreed [on] immediate actions to dismantle the Russian espionage network in the U.K.,” she said, reporting that the United Kingdom has cut off all “high-level contacts between the United Kingdom and the Russian Federation.”

“The United Kingdom will now expel 23 Russian diplomats, who have been identified as undeclared intelligence officers,” May announced.
