Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN) joked about being on the campaign trail so much that his dogs probably don’t recognize him during a fundraiser in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday and just days after the South Bend Tribune blasted Buttigieg for being an absentee mayor.

“I do bring greetings from Chasten, who had to verify that our house is still there because we don’t see it quite as often as we’d like, and make sure that Buddy and Truman still recognize us,” Buttigieg said.

Buttigieg’s joke came just a day after the South Bend Tribune published an article about how running for president had made him an absentee mayor.

The South Bend Tribune calculated that of the 120 days from February 1 through May 31, Buttigieg “was away or plans to be away from the South Bend area at least 55 days, or 45 percent of the calendar days” while he runs for president.
