McCarthy Launches Leadership Bid: ‘I Expect Us to Win Back the House’

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy formally announced his bid to be the leader of the House Republicans and pledged to take them out of the minority and back into the majority in a letter to his Republican colleagues on Wednesday.

“Today is a difficult day. Our members competed hard across the country. But after months of enduring nonstop biased attacks and unprecedented liberal resources, we came short of defying history and holding the House,” McCarthy wrote to his Republican colleagues. “Even so, we should not let last night’s results diminish the great gains President Trump and our majority have delivered.”

McCarthy then touted how the 115th Congress had slashed regulations, rebuilt the United States military, and passed the GOP tax reform bill.

McCarthy then said that Republicans “need to lay the groundwork to regain the majority so that we can continue working alongside President Trump to fulfill our promise to fundamentally change Washington.” McCarthy’s letter then provided a detailed plan as to how he would accomplish this goal.

“The fight ahead will not be easy—but that is exactly what makes it worthwhile. Talking to so many of you, I am inspired by your resolve in the face of this challenge. Know that I am 100% committed to this conference and I would be honored to have your support,” McCarthy concluded.

For Republicans to be successful in retaking the House, they will need to be able to out raise their Democratic opponents. That’s something they failed to do in 2018.

While the majority of Republicans struggled with fundraising in 2018, McCarthy raised more than $60 million for House Republicans, which is more than any Majority Leader in history.

McCarthy achieved this accomplishment by traveling to 46 states to help 75 members of Congress and 22 candidates in their races. He also directly transferred more than $17 million to the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) this cycle.

The House Republicans will hold their leadership elections next week, and only Rep. Jim Jordan (D-OH), who co-founded the House Freedom Caucus, is challenging McCarthy for the top job in the Republican caucus.
