Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), always looking for ways to positively pitch herself to voters ahead of a tough re-election campaign in 2018, portrayed herself as a border expert on Tuesday morning.

She claimed on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that she has “a really good working knowledge” of border security, because she serves on the Homeland Security committee in the U.S. Senate.

“Well, I think as somebody who is the ranking member on Homeland Security, I have a really good working knowledge of what we need on the border. And so, I hopefully will be very involved in the border security piece of this.”

McCaskill may want to check her attendance record before she brags, though.

According to data compiled from the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO), McCaskill missed 65 percent of Homeland Security hearings from 2007 through 2016. This figure does not include four hearings McCaskill missed while undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

A 35-percent attendance rating means McCaskill missed important hearings on border security, throwing into doubt her claims of being an expert on the issue.
