McCaskill Engages in Brinksmanship, 24 Hours Before Government Shuts Down

The government is mere hours away from shutting down, with services for hundreds of millions of Americans and services grinding to a halt, and Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) is complaining about continuing resolutions (CRs).

In an apparent attempt to head off future criticism of her likely vote to shut down the government, McCaskill “lamented on Twitter” about the CR process on Thursday evening, according to Politico.

Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri, another vulnerable Democrat who has yet to come out in support of the short-term spending bill, lamented on Twitter on Thursday: “We have had 4 CRs in 5 months! … And one party is completely in charge.”

McCaskill is correct about the CRs. But even if she wants a long-term spending bill, Congress simply doesn’t have the time to negotiate one between now and when the government shuts down, in less than 24 hours.

This means that McCaskill’s ‘lament’ is nothing more than political posturing. Perhaps she knows Missourians could punish her at the ballot box if she votes to shut down the government.
