McCaskill in Further Trouble, as Watchdog Calls for Problem Into Private Plane

The private plane issue for Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) may dog the vulnerable incumbent for months, if the Senate Ethics Committee decides to act on a request from a watchdog group filed this week.

Politico‘s Elana Schor reported that the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) has formally filed a request that the Senate Ethics Committee investigate how McCaskill reported income from her husband’s private plane on her 2017 disclosure.

The ethics investigation request, filed by the right-leaning Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, or FACT, cites McCaskill’s 2017 Senate financial disclosure, which reported between $0 and $201 of income from the plane owned by her husband’s company. When McCaskill’s husband bought the plane in 2013, her office stated that it would be chartered for outside use in addition to primary use by his company and occasional use by the senator.

FACT’s argument is that McCaskill’s frequent use of the private plane would generate more than $200 of income for her husband’s company that owns the plane.

McCaskill’s explanation, according to Schor, is that the financial disclsoure reported net profits for the company that owns the plane, not revenues.

A McCaskill spokeswoman said that Senate financial disclosure forms require the reporting of total net profits, rather than gross revenues, meaning that she reported effectively zero income from the plane because it operated at a loss for the year.

Regardless of whether the Senate Ethics Committee investigates, and regardless of what they find if they do, the controversy is not a great look for McCaskill. What’s more, it comes on the heels of another damaging story this week, that McCaskill’s husband “has invested $1 million in a hedge fund set up in the Cayman Islands, one of the world’s most notorious tax havens.”
