McCaskill: Nobody in D.C. Thinks Trump’s Border Wall is ‘Gonna Happen’

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) offered some frank thoughts on President Trump’s proposed border wall between the U.S. and Mexico this week, claiming no one in D.C. thinks it’s going to happen.

Business Insider reported on Wednesday:

The inclusion of a wall and fencing along significant portions of the southern US border will be something most Democrats will have to stomach if they want a bill that Trump will sign — they just do not want to call it a wall.

“First of all, using the construction of the border is a term that I think is not the correct term. Will there have to be robust border security? Yes. Will it involve some segments of barrier? Yes,” said Sen. Claire McCaskill, who serves as the top Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security Committee. “But to say a border wall, it conjures up the image of sea to shining sea wall and I don’t think anybody in Washington thinks that’s gonna happen, including the president’s chief of staff.”

Also on Wednesday, President Trump announced he will seek $25 billion for that very border wall in negotiations with Congress over permanent protections for so-called DREAMers:

President Donald Trump on Wednesday previewed his outline for an immigration bill that he will promote next week, saying he wants $25 billion to build a border wall and is open to granting citizenship to illegal immigrants who were brought to the United States as children.

As NTK Network reported this week, McCaskill fashions herself an expert on border security even though she missed almost two-thirds of Homeland Security committee hearings from 2007 through 2016.

And, of course, Trump has, more than once, done things that no one “in Washington” expected he would do.
