As noted by NTK Network in a fact-check on Wednesday, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) is touting her “independent” credentials in a new ad released this week for the home stretch of her campaign against Attorney General Josh Hawley (R-MO).

The ad is notable in part because it features a Republican senator, Pat Roberts of Kansas.

Roberts, though, is not interested in being featured in McCaskill’s ad. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Roberts demanded he be removed from the ad.

Late Tuesday, the campaign of her Republican opponent, Josh Hawley, issued a release quoting Roberts demanding that McCaskill remove “my name and quote from her ad.”

Roberts claimed McCaskill had turned more partisan since Trump was elected.

McCaskill, for her part, seemed to confirm she had not received Roberts’s OK before featuring him in her ad.

The Post-Dispatch asked McCaskill on Tuesday afternoon if she had spoken to Roberts about using his quote in the ad prior to its airing.

“I meant to. I saw him on the (Senate) floor, but I have not talked to him,” she said.

What does it say about McCaskill’s “independent” or bipartisan credentials when the one Republican she cites in an ad immediately asks her to take it down? Missouri voters will decide how independent they consider McCaskill to be in just over four weeks.
