McCaskill Says Problems With GOP-Led Tax Cuts Are a List ‘Longer Than Santa’s’

It appears McCaskill really doesn't want Missourians to get a tax cut in 2018, if her comments on the pending bill at a town hall on Saturday are any indicator.

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) continued her march against the GOP-led tax cut effort over the weekend, leveling some searing criticism at the bill at a town hall on Saturday. The bill is expected to receive a vote in the Senate this week.

St. Louis Public Radio reported:

A final version of the tax cut package was released Friday night and will likely be voted on next week. McCaskill said she hadn’t had a chance to read the entire thousand-plus page bill yet, but added that she was not happy with the main points.

“I could give you a huge long list — a list longer than Santa’s list — of what’s wrong with this bill,” she said.

That legislation is likely to pass out of Congress after enough Senate Republicans came out in support of it. “I don’t think there is any hope” of Democrats blocking the tax overhaul, McCaskill said, adding she found it “frustrating” the bill favors corporations more than individuals and families.

Of course, McCaskill’s opposition to tax cuts is not surprising. She voted against the Senate version of the bill earlier this month and confidently predicted her vote against a break for Missouri families and businesses was “not risky.”

Her continued campaign against the bill, though, is surprising, given her vulnerability as she stands for re-election in 2018.

A CNN tax plan calculator finds that, for example, a Missouri couple filing jointly and making between $40,000 and $75,000 a year, with two or more children, would see a 4.9-percent tax cut in 2018.

Does McCaskill include that tax cut on her list of what’s “wrong” with the bill?
