Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) is talking a tough game on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and the Supreme Court vacancy.

From Politico:

Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), who voted against Gorsuch, said he “probably won’t be whipped” by Schumer, as did Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.). And Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) said “Chuck knows better” than to press her to vote with the caucus.

“He doesn’t come to me and say: ‘You’ve got to vote with us on this.’ He knows I’ll tell him to take a flyin’ leap,” McCaskill said. “I’m going to do what I think is right. It has nothing to do with the party.”

What McCaskill knows, though, and didn’t disclose in her statement to Politico, is that her reelection chances hinge in part on the money Schumer and his allies are pouring into her 2018 effort. McCaskill has received $10,000 from Schumer’s leadership PAC, IMPACT, this cycle alone.

Their ties go deeper than campaign contributions, though. Schumer reported on his 2016 personal financial disclosure that McCaskill paid $8,235 for “[h]otel, meals, [and] airfare” for Schumer’s trip to Cancun, Mexico.

And Schumer allies at Senate Majority PAC are spending $80 million in nine states, including Missouri, to try to save the careers of McCaskill and other Senate Democrats.

McCaskill may talk a big game about Schumer, but her political career is dependent, for now, on his campaign cash.
