McCaskill Votes Against Trump’s Immigration Plan

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) voted against President Trump’s immigration proposal in the U.S. Senate on Thursday, a bold move for the vulnerable incumbent ahead of a tough re-election campaign in a state Trump won by 18 points in 2016.

McCaskill was one of 44 Democrats to vote against the measure, which took the form of an amendment submitted by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA). But a few of her colleagues also up for re-election in 2018 – Sens. Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), and Joe Manchin (D-WV) – voted for the proposal.

Grassley summarized his measure in a press release a few days prior:

  • “[O]ur amendment fully funds the President’s border security requests,” to the tune of $25 billion
  • “[O]ur amendment provides a generous and permanent solution for up to 1.8 million DACA or DACA-eligible recipients,” matching the president’s proposal
  • “[O]ur proposal reforms family-based immigration to place greater emphasis on the nuclear family”
  • “[O]ur plan reallocates the 55,000 visas in the Diversity Visa Lottery program to clearing backlogs in the family-based and employment-based backlogs”

McCaskill now has the task of returning to Missouri and explaining her vote to constituents, ahead of the political fight of her life this fall.
