Meadows: If DACA Recipients Get Deported, That’s on Democrats

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC), the leader of the House Freedom Caucus, told NTK at CPAC on Friday that it was “up to the Democrats in the Senate” whether Congress would pass immigration packages, including President Trump’s proposed border wall.

Meadows placed the onus for protecting members of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program on Congressional Democrats.

“I think [immigration reform is] up to Democrats in the Senate to determine what they want to do,” he said. “If they want to make sure that DACA recipients don’t face deportation, which is what [the president’s] plan will do, I think it’s time for them to re-engage.”

As for the border wall, Meadows told NTK that it was “one of the four pillars” of the president’s plan. The Freedom Caucus chair said Congress must work on the rest of the president’s plan, in addition to the wall.

Trump’s proposed immigration reform failed in the Senate last week in a 39-60 vote, with only three Democrats voting in favor. The bill would have provided protection for 1.8 million DACA-eligible illegal immigrants, while allocating $25 billion for the president’s border wall and ending chain migration and the diversity visa lottery program.
