Before President Trump dismissed Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin, reports that a damning Inspector General investigation would sink the VA secretary dominated the media. Trump fired Shulkin after his various ethics violations produced distracting headlines, and the president nominated the White House physician as Shulkin’s successor.

Stories about Shulkin’s mismanagement of the agency included misuse of taxpayer money, paranoia about VA employees, and failing care for veterans at VA hospitals located near the secretary’s office:

But Shulkin went after the Trump administration a day after his dismissal in an opinion piece in The New York Times, immediately changing the media narrative. The former secretary wrote that advocates of VA privatization in the White House forced him out of his position.

“I have been falsely accused of things by people who wanted me out of the way. But despite these politically based attacks on me and my family’s character, I am proud of my record and know that I acted with the utmost integrity,” he wrote of internal charges against him.

It took less than a day for Shulkin to appear on CNN to comment on the future of the Trump administration:

He also appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Friday.
