President Trump, showing the merciful and benevolent side of his presidency, pardoned two turkeys, Drumstick and Wishbone, at the White House on Tuesday, ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Prior to the pardoning, the president joked about the actions of his predecessors at the annual event.

Trump pointed out that President Truman, who was the first president presented with a turkey, did not grant a pardon to the animal. “He was a tough cookie,” he remarked. “Today I’m going to be a much nicer president.”

The president also suggested in jest that he considered revoking protections for the two turkeys that President Obama pardoned last year, Tater and Tot.

“As many of you know, I have been very active in overturning a number of executive actions by my predecessor. However, I have been informed by the White House Counsel’s Office that Tater’s and Tot’s pardons cannot be revoked,” he said.

“So Tater and Tot, you can rest easy,” Trump assured.

After his remarks, the president, joined by his wife and son, raised his hands and pardoned Drumstick.

“I feel so good about myself doing this,” he remarked.
