Microsoft President Brad Smith declared 2017 “a wake up call for cyber security and for the world,” and that companies like Microsoft “have a fundamental role to play in protecting people,” during an interview with Axios Friday.

“Cyberspace has become the new battlefield,” according to Smith. “For the most part, we would say we live in a world that is at peace. These are the kinds of attacks that one would more typically associate with times of war.”

Smith told Axios managing editor Kim Hart that foreign governments are using cyber warfare to attack citizens, and the first example of this, according to Smith, was the WannaCry ransomware attack that occurred in May 2017.

North Korea was behind the WannaCry ransomware attack, which affected more than 200,000 individuals from across the world.

“In the history of the world, we’ve never seen a single attack that has affected so many places simultaneously,” Smith said about WannaCry.

Smith said, “2017 was a wake up call for cyber security and for the world. The tech industry has a fundamental role to play in protecting people. We’re going to need to broaden our collaborative work as an industry, and we’re going to need to work with responsible governments to play defense and protect people around the world.”
