Vice President Mike Pence, on a trip to South Korea, stopped at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between South and North Korea, looking across at the North’s soldiers on the other side.

“This is a frontier of freedom,” Pence told CNN’s Dana Bash.

“For more than six decades, U.S. forces and forces of South Korea have held the line for freedom here at the DMZ,” Pence said.

Bash reported that North Korean soldiers took pictures of the vice president in an effort to intimidate him, as has been their usual practice with American officials.

Tensions have escalated between the United States and North Korea over repeated weapons tests to mark the beginning of the Trump administration.

North Korea attempted a ballistic missile test Sunday, but the test missile failed shortly after launch.
