Millennials, Other Generations to Boomers: Big U.S. Problems Are Your Fault

A plurality of Millennials (born 1984-2000) and Generation Xers (born 1968-1983) blame Baby Boomers (born 1949-1967) for making “things worse” for their generations, according to a new poll released by Axios on Wednesday.

The poll found that 51% of millennials (18- to 34-year-olds) blame boomers (51- to 69-year-olds) for making things worse for their generation. Just 13% said boomers had improved things. Generation X wasn’t pleased with the boomers, either.

According to Axios, many Baby Boomers (almost a third) admit their generation made things worse.

Boomers were split on the issue: 30% said policies created by their generation had made things worse, 32% said they had made things better, and 34% that they had done neither.

A majority of Millennials, a plurality of Gen-Xers, and nearly a third of the Silent Generations (born 1948 or earlier) blame Baby Boomers for making things worse.

America’s four most recent presidents, and many of its congressional leaders, are in or near the Baby Boomer generation. By Axios‘ definition, Clinton, W. Bush, and Trump (all born 1946) fall just outside the Baby Boomer category. But by others’ definitions, they’re all Baby Boomers. Obama is a late Baby Boomer.

From when Clinton took office to today, U.S. debt has increase more than fivefold, from nearly $4.2 trillion to more than $21 trillion. Social Security and Medicare remain near crisis. Political gridlock is at an all-time high. Could putting a different generation in charge yield better results?
