Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, while being grilled by Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) at a House Ways and Means Committee Hearing on Thursday, encouraged Congress to consider changing laws regarding gun ownership, a public break with the rest of his administration.

Lewis asked Mnuchin if any money in the president’s budget was dedicated to preventing gun violence, but the secretary denied that he had intricate knowledge of every program in the budget.

“I will say, personally, I think the gun violence – it’s a tragedy what we’ve seen yesterday – and I urge Congress to look at these issues,” Mnuchin added.

The Georgia representative asked Mnuchin if he had any proposals, but the secretary pointed out that he would be “out of [his] lane” putting forward any specific policy ideas.

Lewis implored Mnuchin to take action on the issue, even in his capacity of Treasury secretary. Mnuchin responded by promising to speak to the president and other cabinet members to urge action on gun violence.
