Monica Lewinsky ended an interview by walking off stage at a conference in Israel over the weekend when the moderator asked Lewinsky whether she wanted an apology from former President Bill Clinton.

Lewinsky became famous in the late 1990s after it was revealed that Lewinsky, who was a White House intern at the time, was having an affair with Clinton.

Moderator Yonit Levi asked Lewinsky about a recent interview conducted by NBC News in which Clinton became “rather irate when he was asked if he ever apologized to” Lewinsky personally.

“Do you still expect that apology, the personal apology?” Levi asked Lewinsky.

“I’m so sorry. I’m not going to be able to do this,” Lewinsky said before leaving the stage.

Lewinsky took to Twitter to defend her actions:

“There were clear parameters about what we would be discussing and what we would not,” Lewinsky said. “The exact question the interviewer asked first, she had put to me when we met the day prior. I said that was off limits. When she asked me it on stage, with blatant disregard for our agreement, it became clear to me I had been misled.”

“I left because it is more important than ever for women to stand up for themselves and not allow others to control their narrative,” Lewinsky said.
