Montana Gov. Steve Bullock is facing an ethics complaint for charging state taxpayers for his security detail as he travels across the country campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The Montana Republican State Central Committee filed a complaint Monday with the commissioner of political practices arguing that Bullock owes taxpayers more than $300,000 in security detail costs dating back to January 2017. Montana Republican Party Chairman Don Kaltschmidt authored the complaint.

Montana Highway Patrol must protect the governor everywhere he goes. It’s a common practice used by other states as well, and it applies to out-of-state campaign events. That’s where Kaltschmidt’s complaint comes in.

In the complaint, Kaltschmidt said the governor’s use of state resources is a “violation of the Montana Code of Ethics because public ‘time, facilities, equipment supplies, personnel, or funds’ were used” while officers took trips with Bullock to Iowa and other states campaigning for president.

He requests Bullock reimburse the money spent on protection while campaigning and that Bullock be fined for violating the Code of Ethics.

Bullock’s campaign did not respond to NBC-Missoula’s request for comment.

The Montana governor failed to make the debate stage during last month’s two-night, 20-candidate affair in Miami. But reports indicate he is likely to appear on stage during the next set of debates in Detroit, Michigan later this month.

Nearly every national poll of Democratic voters dating back to April shows Bullock with zero or one percent support, according to RealClearPolitics.
