Montana Gov. Steve Bullock Jumps in the 2020 Dem Fight

The Democrat believes that because he won statewide in Montana, a state Trump won in 2016, he has a winning message.

More than 20 other Democrats are already running for president, but that didn’t stop Montana Gov. Steve Bullock from throwing his hat in the ring on Tuesday. Bullock joins Washington Gov. Jay Inslee as the second sitting governor to join the fray.

Bullock’s campaign slogan is “A Fair Shot for Everyone,” and he is expected to focus much of his early campaign efforts on making inroads in Iowa. As governor of a rural state, Bullock’s team believes he will be able to connect with voters in the Hawkeye State.

But Bullock got a late start. He waited until the Montana legislative session concluded to formally enter the presidential race, so he’ll be playing catch up with his fellow competitors, many of whom are already better known by voters.

Bullock is centering his message on “electability,” arguing he has the best shot at defeating Trump because of his red state appeal:

The 53-year-old Bullock plans to center his campaign on his electability — the Democratic governor who won reelection in 2016 in a red-state that Trump carried by 20 points — and his ability to pass progressive priorities like Medicaid expansion and campaign finance reform with a Republican legislature. Before serving as governor, he was the state attorney general.

The problem for Bullock is that nobody knows who he is. And by entering the race late, he’s giving himself less time to get acquainted with early state voters.

And Bullock will face the same challenges as every other candidate: how do you stop former Vice President Joe Biden, who is polling at about 40 percent. The next best candidate, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), is polling somewhere in the mid-teens. Bullock will likely start out in the low single-digits.

It’s not an insurmountable challenge, but it’s not at all clear how Bullock plans to overcome it.
