Montana Senate Race is Virtually Tied, According to New Poll

Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), once thought to have a more comfortable lead than some of his other Democrat colleagues, has found himself locked in an incredibly tight race with Republican Matt Rosendale, according to a new CBS News/YouGov poll.

Tester leads Rosendale, 47-45, according to the poll, which has a margin of error of 5.2 percentage points. That two-point lead is hardly enough to assuage national Democrats eager to devote money to other tight contests in Missouri, Florida, and North Dakota, among others.

Political prognosticators at FiveThirtyEight gave Tester an 88-percent chance of winning reelection as recently as last week. That put the Montana U.S. Senate race in the “Likely Democrat” category, which is the same designation given by the Cook Political Report.

Trump traveled to Montana earlier this month to, in theory, rally support for Rosendale. The president spent much of his time at the podium railing against the media.

Vice President Mike Pence cut a new ad going after Tester that started airing just after Labor Day. He also made ads airing in North Dakota and Indiana. The ads focus on Democrats’ opposition to the GOP tax bill, Obamacare repeal, and support for sanctuary cities and Planned Parenthood.
