Morning Consult’s Monthly Approval Tracker Finds 3 Senate Dems Slipping

Morning Consult is keeping track of vulnerable U.S. senators’ approval ratings on a monthly basis leading up to the midterm elections, and August’s new numbers bring particularly bad news for three vulnerable Democrats.

Sens. Bill Nelson (D-FL), Claire McCaskill (D-MO), and Joe Donnelly (D-IN) all saw their net approval ratings slip from July to August. Here’s how far their ratings fell:

  • Nelson’s net approval fell four points, from +5 (42-37) to +1 (40-39)
  • McCaskill’s net approval fell three points, from -5 (39-44) to -8 (38-46)
  • Donnelly’s net approval fell two points, from +6 (41-35) to +4 (40-36)

The other seven vulnerable senators saw either flat net approval ratings over the month or small increases of a point or two.

What’s worse for this group of 10 vulnerable senators is that for nine of the 10 a plurality of their constituents think it’s “Time for [a] New Person” in office. The only senator whose constituents think he deserves re-election is Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), by a narrow four-point margin (44-40).

Of Morning Consult‘s list, nine senators are Democrats and just one is Republican.
