MoveOn Endorses Ilhan Omar

Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) 2020 reelection campaign received its first endorsement on Thursday, and it comes from the “top-moneyed progressive advocacy group,” according to Fox News.

Moveon.org’s endorsement of Omar is not surprising at all given that they pressured 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls earlier this year to skip the 2019 AIPAC Policy Conference.

Omar herself has routinely attacked AIPAC since getting elected to Congress and even went as far as to suggest that members of the group have “dual loyalty,” an anti-Semitic trope routinely used by anti-Semites.

“Despite racist and anti-Muslim attacks to silence the first Black, Muslim congresswoman in the United States — and blatant attempts to incite violence against her and Muslim communities — Rep. Omar has continued to speak out for bold, progressive policies in order to fight for a society where all of us, not just the rich and powerful, can thrive,” MoveOn’s statement said.

Fox News, however, pointed out the hypocrisy of endorsement:

“But the endorsement may prove to be rather awkward for Omar who has long decried the influence of money in politics.”

“MoveOn has a huge war chest that is used exclusively to prop up Democratic candidates. In the 2018 election cycle, the group spent about $3.5 million, with millions going into running ads against Republicans.”

MoveOn claimed in their statement that their endorsement of Omar had nothing to do with the freshman congresswoman’s opposition to AIPAC, but that seems a little hard to believe.
