MSNBC called the New Jersey Senate race for embattled Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) on Tuesday despite the fact that his Republican opponent was still leading in the polls.

“Let me just interrupt for one second. We have a winner in the Senate race in the state of New Jersey. New Jersey remains blue,” MSNBC’s Brian Williams said.

Williams said this despite the graphic on the screen showing Republican Bob Hugin leading Menendez by two points. Hugin has been closing in on Menendez in recent polls.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow had to quickly clarify that this was just a projection and not the final result.
